Marburg Theatre

First of all we have the Hessisches Landestheater (the Hessen state theatre) that also performs its theatre productions in other cities in and beyond Hessen that do not have their own companies.

In addition to this, there are two off-theatre companies in Marburg:

the German Stage Service in the Theater neben dem Turm (TNT) at the grounds of the former gas works and the

Theater Gegenstand in the Waggonhalle (also see "Adressen Kultur in Marburg”).


Music

If you want to describe the local music scene, you might have to name pretty much all styles and eras of music:

From the music of the Renaissance to Jazz and on to HipHop, from the Marburger Konzertverein (a society for promoting classical concerts and recitals) to the MusikerIn-nerverein e.V. (a registered club of musicians), that organises rock rehearsals.

The two large orchestras, the Students’ Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and the Junge Marburger Philharmonie even perform open air at the city festival "3 Tage Marburg” (three days of Marburg; see "Adressen Kultur in Marburg”).

Socio-Cultural Centres

In the year 1977 the Kulturladen KFZ (culture platform, "free cultural centre”) was founded signalling the start of a lively socio-cultural scene.

That was followed by the Theater neben dem Turm (TNT), Café Trauma, which will also soon find its home at the grounds of the former gas works, and the Waggonhalle with the troupe Theater GegenStand (see "Adressen Kultur in Marburg”).

Literature

Where literature is concerned, Marburg has quite a bit to offer:

- five literary clubs with different emphases - plus the event "Literatur um 11”, Sundays at 11:00 a.m. in Cafè Vetter

- the Philipps University‘s faculty Neuere deutsche Literatur und Medien (department of modern and contemporary German literature and media), and the Verein Literatur und Schule (a society for promoting literary events in educational facilities)

- further initiatives in the field of literature, such as the Internet site for literary reviews and information www.literaturkritik.de

- and a "Literaturpreis der Universitätsstadt Marburg und des Landkreises Marburg-Biedenkopf” (Literature Award of the University City of Marburg and the County of Marburg-Biedenkopf), that has honoured interesting up-and-coming literary talents biennially since 1980 (see "Adressen Kultur in Marburg”).
