An open-end learning process
The following is a contribution from Mayor Vaupel to the newspaper "Politik und Kultur - Zeitung des Deutschen Kulturrates” (a newspaper from the German Cultural Council), March/April 2004.
Politicians are expected to give quick and decisive answers. However, there has seldom been a time in which the number of pressing questions has grown faster than now. But the more pressing and diverse these questions concerning our future become, the more it appears to me that one answer of strategic dimensions is emerging:
the importance of education and culture as public commodities is on the rise. Important for the future of our society and important from the standpoint of equal opportunity for each individual.

Since 1987 the city of Marburg, in cooperation with the Department of Evangelical Theology and the Catholic Theological Seminar of the Philipps-University, has held the "Ecumenical Colloquy of Marburg”.
This event is so titled in association to the famous religious debates that took place here in Marburg during the Reformation, thus bringing Christians of both confessions together every two years to discuss current issues of particular ecumenical interest.
