Experience and Enjoy
"Marburg is absolutely splendid. When I arrived and could finally look at everything myself, I hardly knew which way was up, I was that overwhelmed."
Ernst Reuter, Politician
In Marburg contrasts live side by side in perfect harmony. Museums are as much a part of Marburg’s cultural scene as bacon is to eggs. And there are plenty of displays - art and history from ultra modern to nostalgic - just as one would expect of a university city.
One socio-cultural characteristic of Marburg: The people of Marburg love their students, but they are cautious of them as well. This subtle tension comes to surface now and then in cultural presentations and events. Whoever looks closely, sees it immediately! Culture and counterculture - opposites that attract the people of Marburg to one another.

Do you like things flamboyant? Or do you prefer them subdued? Rebellious, innovative, or more conservative, traditional? The Marburg cultural scene will have something to offer to all. In the city auditorium - the "Erwin-Piscator-Haus” - you can see the Hessian State Theater, symphonic orchestra, renowned chamber ensembles and distinguished soloists. Or do you prefer the alternative, experimental scene? Then look into the small stages, like the "KFZ”, Marburg’s free centre for culture and communication, or the "G-Werk” (at Afföllerwiesen) or "TheaterGegenStand” in the Waggonhalle. Or simply go to the "Open-Air” in the castle gardens and afterwards let the ambience at the Market Square, the theatre centre at Schwanhof or at a courtyard festival in Weidenhausen put you under its spell. That is Marburg - from the highest quality to the cultural trifles. All you have to do is choose.
